Week 5 Art

This week once again I spent the majority of my time creating a presentation although for art this time. I was suck between two very different artists both with very different and unique styles; Jenny Saville and Kandinsky, after doing quite a bit research I found Kandinsky works much more interesting with his bold abstract pieces of art. Kandinsky was first discovered in the early 20th century. When came about the birth of abstraction art. Out went fine art painting with identifiable people and objects. And in came abstract floating shapes, geometric blocks of colour and canvas’ full of vertical and horizontal lines.

Kandinsky’s style developed towards abstraction with a colourful and expressionist manner. In 1925 Kandinsky’s painted yellow, red, blue. This has became one of Kandinsky’s most well known pieces. Kandinsky’s noted the form and colour of each primary shape. The painting has corresponding colours - a yellow triangle, red square and a blue circle. Within this painting Kandinsky adds variation and a theme.

Composition VII (7) is a series of 10 paintings, composition VII is one of Kandinsky most famous paintings, this is one of his most complex and ambitious works. It is made up of many different shapes and colours. This painting is one of the largest of Kandinsky’s paintings.

At a first glance the painting seems just a outcome of spontaneous creativity. However the painting is carefully constructed. There is powerful diagonal thrust towards the upper right hand corner, this creates a sense of fracture between the left and right and sides of the picture. On the left, the jagged forms suggest a collapsing of structure. Contrasting to the right where there is more lighter, flatter forms and calmer rhythms perhaps suggesting and symbolizing the garden of eden. As Kandinsky was seen to be quite a religious man. Within the image there is no conventual perceptive, although strong dynamics provide a sense of depth and space.

As I said music was a big influent in Kandinsky work. Kandinsky first realized the emotional power within music when he first attend a performance of Richard Wagners opera in the 1980’s. Later on Kandinsky become a good friend of the Australian composer Arnold whose 12 tone method of composition was a turning point in 20th century music. Arnold showed expressionism movements within his work allowing sounds to remain clashing and rejected conventual structures to give a compositional meaning. In a similar way Kandinsky replaced representation with abstraction in his work.

Kandinsky continued painting almost until his death in June, 1944. His Endless quest for new forms carried him to the very extremes of geometric abstraction that have provided us with an unparalleled collection of abstract art.
I felt my presentation went well, I tried to speak loud and clear however I do think the nerves got the better of me!!

Week 4 Art

It was the last week of drawing today. I had really began to appreciate drawing and see it in a different light, rather than just pencil and paper. Especially by studying different artists throughout this month such as by as Holstad and Donahey. Both Holstad, Donahey and many other artist have inspired to think outside the box and try different medias.
Although when I first started drawing it slightly bugged me that I was unable to do some simple and detailed still life drawing. As this seemed to me to be "real drawing". However when I begin this I found it slight boring lack the interested I found within the other projects.
For this session, a still life was created of a few baskets and other different textured objects such as bowls and mirrors. I had to draw these in a numerous of ways I found all these different techniques, that I had learnt and developed over the past month had me help to create some really interesting and exciting pieces of art.

Week 3 Art

This week in drawing class was very experimental and interesting. This week i have enjoyed most. The class had a very personal touch. We had to bring in five objects which meant something about ourselves. Living in halls I had little sentimental objects which was rather annoying. This session bought both aspect of from my two earlier sessions; blind drawing and textured collage. I really like the shape and shadow of a bracelet i had bought in and used this throughout the day. I found the blind drawing quite changeling. I felt the need to look at my drawing and correct the mis-drawn line or smudge.
Once i was able to do my own thing with object i was really in my comfort zone, I layered up the bracelet within the page using lots of different medias such as ink, charcoal and pencil. I am really pleased with my final piece. However regret spending so much time on perfecting one piece.

After creating this piece I discovered a fantastic artist Kathy Donahey, she uses acrylics, oils, pastels and collage. Much like my image Donahey likes to layer up her images within her paintings often combining several in one piece. Donahey's work is surrounded in fantasy and daydreams creating surreal pieces.

Week 2 Art

At the beginning of this class we were set a task to go and collect and make rubbings from outside. I have a passion for typography therefore a lot of my rubbings were type or bold, harsh objects such as trees, stone and brickwork.
After this, using objects from outdoors we created mini sculptures, mine was made from a bottle top, twigs and pine cone. This is seems very simple and boring, very pre school like. I didn't like where this project was going and struggled get the enthusiasm I needed to create a bold strong piece reflecting my media. However using my rubbings I managed to create many collages of my natural sculpture. I used black paper to create tone and shadow within my images, and white paper to create highlights.Overall I was pleased with my final pieces. I created three images which made a nice set and worked well together with similar tone used throughout and the intricate detail to each piece.

Although I didn't enjoy this exercise as much as I had anticipated, I did like the idea of making an image out of collage espically the fact that i had created the the media used for the collage. However this exercise did lead me onto a great find of Christian Holstad, whom is an artist that deal manly in textured work and collage.

Christian Holstad was born in 1972 and his work is highly shown in Europe and Japan. His work is often highly detailed; made from many different medias mixed into one image such as drawing, collage and needlework.

Week 1 Art

On my first drawing class we were asked to create blind drawings of our faces only by touching and feeling our face. I also did a similar thing with my hand drawing bling by touch. Although this exercise was only a warm up it loosened my drawing up. Therefore my next drawings became for free and less fractured. This warm up was quite challenging at first as I had never done anything like this before, i was quite happy with the final outcome although my drawings looked like it had been completed by a young child.

This style of drawing very much reminded me of Fauvism art with its flattened perceptive and simple detailed areas. Such as Henri Matisse The Sadness of the King.

After loosen up we then did some loose drawings of our hands concentrating on the line and shape rather than creating a lifelike image. I  did many of these experimenting with many different medias, got rather excited by it all, I moved onto my feet too!!
